Chapter 3: Types, Forms, Styles of Writing
In this week, I've learnt the Types, Forms, Styles of Writing. Writing is not just about writing, you don't just simply write something, when you write, there are some things that you may want to consider when you want to write. You should consider what Types, Forms, and Styles of Writing do you want to use.
Types and Forms of Writing
1. Expository - The main purpose of Expository writing is to Explain. It is more likely to be subject oriented writing style which the author focus on telling you of a given topic without personal opinion. It furnish you with relevant facts and figures (you CAN'T/MUSTN'T include your personal opinion or change it). Mostly this type of writing can be seen from textbooks and from a how-to articles. It's all about theories, proven facts, cannot be changed. The Key Point of Expository writing are: Explain in a process, equipped with facts and figures, in a logical order and sequence. The Writing Patterns can usually be seen in, Textbook writing, articles, recipes, news stories, business/technical/scientific writing.
2. Descriptive - The main purpose of Descriptive writing is to Describe. It focuss on describing a character, an event, or a place. It can be poetic (make people feel it mentally, with emotional), author can take time to be very specific in his/her description, must be able to make audience to relate or to capture the image that the author is trying to bring out from the writing. The Key Points of Descriptive writing are: Often poetic in nature, describes places, people, events, situation, or locations in a highly-detailed manner (precise), visualizes with 5 senses (see, hear, taste, smell, feel). The Writing Patterns can usually be seen in, Poetry, journal or diary writing, nature writing, descriptive passage in fiction.
3. Persuasive - The main purpose of Persuasive writing is to Convince. Unlike Expository writing, Persuasive writing usually contains opinions and biases of author, author usually include their personal feeling/opinion into it to convince others to agree author's point of view. It contains justifications and reasons. It is often used in letter of complaint, advertisement or commercial, affiliate marketing pitches, cover letters, newspaper opinion and editorial pieces. The Key Points of Persuasive writing are: it is equipped with reasons, arguments, and justifications, author take a stands and ask you to agree with his/her point of view, and ask readers to do something about the situation (call-to-action). The Writing Patterns can usually be seen in, Opinion and editorial newspaper pieces, advertisements, reviews (for books, movie, music, restaurant, etc), letter of recommendation, letter of complaint and cover letters.
4. Narrative - The main purpose of Narrative writing is to Write a story. The author will creates different characters and tell you what happens to them (first person narration). Usually are novels, short stories, novellas, and biography. It s very simple, narrative writing must be able to make audience to question, be curious of "What happened to them/next?" If you failed to do so you failed as a narrative writer. The Key Points of Narrative writing are: to tell a story or event, has characters and dialogue, definite and logical beginning, intervals, and endings, it have situations like actions, motivational events, and disputes or conflict with their eventual solutions. The Writing Process are usually seen in, Novels, short stories, poetry oral histories, anecdotes and autobiographies/biographies.
Styles of Writing
In a writing, there are many style of writing but you must know which style do you prefer for your writing. Do you want it to be Subjective or Objective; Impersonal or Personal; Informal or Formal. You can only choose either one in your writing and always stick to it, never go confusing your audiences.
Personal sharing of the week
This week Ms. Thinessha also asked us to watch 2 videos from YouTube, 1st video was named "The Translator (Short Comedy Film)" and the 2nd video was named "SHATTERED NORM: THE ZIG ZAG WORLD". We were asked to choose one video and write a synopsis for the video after watching it. We had chosen the 1st video (The Translator) because it's much more easier to understand and to write a synopsis because it's content is just straight forward to the title of the video. From this tutorial work, I've learnt that it is important to use the right title which is relevant to the video content so that before audience start watching they already have a brief idea on what they will be watching as soon as they start watching the video.
That's all from me and I hope you peeps can continue to learn and finally get to improve your Englund. Opps, English I mean. HAHAHAHA
THANK YOU!
